Today, Shawn introduced me a new project launched here in the bay called Uber, originally named UberCab. He is involved as an investor and has invited me to join on this new endeavor. The concept is simple and straight forward. Firstly, download the Uber application on your iPhone, create an account, and select your destination address. The Uber application then pairs you with nearby Uber drivers by sending your current iPhone’s location to the driver.
A map is shown on the screen with the drivers near you and your driver of choice. In realtime, you are able to watch the progress of the driver’s car travel to your current location for pickup. Once the driver arrives, hop in the Uber car and begin the journey to desired destination. The neat thing is how payment is baked-in to the mobile application on account registration to your charge card of choice. Simple and perfect for San Francisco.
I view this as a modern-age streamlined way to hail a cab with the convince of launching an easy-to-use app on the iPhone and instantly communicating with your driver en route, seeing their profile photo and rating of overall experience left by other riders of the application. If this proves to be a useful and adopted service, I can imagine this being applied to other major cities in the near future.
